MTV VJ and Yfm DJ Sizwe Dhlomo interviewed the South African President, Jacob Zuma, in Pretoria yesterday for the MTV Base Meets… series.Sizwe was clearly excited, as he tweeted in the run-up to the interview — and also acknowledged a slight nervousness.
That's a good thing; something's wrong if you aren't nervous about your interview with the President! My fly on the wall says that it was a very entertaining interview, and that our President had the crew in stitches. Besides making Sizwe and crew laugh with his jokes and quips, President Zuma also addressed the now infamous statement that has been attributed to him for years. According to the President, while he was on trial, the prosecutor asked him about the sequence of events following his sexual encounter with the woman who had accused him of rape. One of the things that the President mentioned in his answer was that he took a shower, and apparently his answer was taken out of context by a journalist. And then, all the other journalists continued to use the quote and that no one ever bothered to give him the chance to correct the quote. So for the record the President says that he never said that taking a shower would protect him from contracting HIV!Another thing he addressed was the issue of Julius Malema — who seems to be a thorn in everyone's side. The President acknowledged that Mr. Malema often says things he shouldn't, but he also said that he was elected as leader of the ANC Youth League by the League itself, so he must be doing something right. He also said that the ANC appreciates his fervour, and would attempt to groom him as a leader.Phew! I must give Sizwe and the MTV producers props on this interview — they managed to get info that no other media organisation have managed to extract from el-Presidente! Mr Zuma corrected Sizwe's statement on his level of education (the bios say that the President only has a Std 8) when he told Zuma that he didn't go to school at all!!! There's now no excuse peeps, people have made something out of themselves from nothing and now it's our turn!I don't want to spoil the show for you guys by revealing all that stuff that was said in during the interview (or when the cameras went off), so keep an eye out for MTV Base Meets Jacob Zuma on MTV Base in the next few weeks. Once again congrats to the MTV crew for securing this interview, a first of its kind in South Africa and President Zuma's first time on pan-African music TV. Other heads of state that have been featured on MTV Base Meets… include Tony Blair and Morgan Tsvangirai.
