RIP SUPREMO KIDD

Yesterday, we woke up to some really bad news about one South Africa's most talented rappers. It has been confirmed that former Hidden Force rapper, Supremo Kidd, has left us for a better place. Also known as "Primo", he was involved in a motorcycle accident.

This is such a great loss to the South African music industry, and we send our condolences to his family, friends and fans. RIP my boy!!

THE HIP HOP AWARDS THAT GIVE RECOGNITION TO THE BEST!!

The sponsors have been drawn, the nominees have been notified, voting is now open and the countdown has begun-It is the second annual HYPE AWARDS, hosted by HYPE Magazine and powered by MTN. MTN is South Africa’s biggest music lover. I mean it is pushing artists and signing amazing deals with SA’s biggest talents. HYPE magazine on the other hand has for a couple of years now, been in the forefront of SA hip hop, whether it be rapping, dancing, beat boxing or graffiti; HYPE magazine has definitely brought a meaningful contribution to the success of Mzansi hip hop. We caught up with Mizi Mtshali, editor of HYPE magazine, to tell us more about the event.

Note: The awards are to be referred to as HYPE Awards powered by MTN, not MTN HYPE Awards, as they were last year.

1) HYPE Magazine already gives South African hip hop dancers, producers and artists’ exposure and a platform to showcase their talents. What is the mission and vision of the MTN HYPE Awards?

HYPE Magazine is the only media platform that is 100% dedicated to hip hop. It is, therefore, our duty to represent all aspects of hip hop culture. These include the dance elements, production, rap, graffiti, DJing and beat boxing. The aim of the HYPE Awards is to give recognition to excellence in these fields. Hip hop is such a complex sub culture, with so many elements… Other awards are unable to focus on hip hop to the extent that we are able to. Hip hop is often represented in categories such as best rap, which creates the impression that rap is the only hip hop element. There is no problem with this, as these other awards are music awards, which automatically eliminates elements such as dance and graffiti, which are more visual. HYPE Awards are not restricted to music. These are hip hop culture awards, and focus hip hop as a whole.

2) With the upcoming event, how many categories are there in total? And why does each category have so many nominees? Isn’t five nominees per category just enough?

We have 14 categories in total. Of these, three categories are closed to public vote and will be adjudicated by a panel of judges. The rest are voted for by the public. What is important to note is that the names posted up on hypemagazine.co.za are not the final nominees. Each category has a list of 20 names who have been active during the eligibility period. This is only the first round of the public vote process, which is explained in detail in the upcoming December/ January issue of HYPE. The public voting has started, and by mid December, we will have a top 15 per category. By the end of January, we will announce the top 5 nominees. This top 5 will be the final list of nominees. The public will then vote for the best out of the final 5. What you see now is the first elimination round. It is structured like a marathon, where fans constantly vote to keep their favorite artists in the running. Artists are encouraged to run their individual campaigns in order to get their fans to vote for them. Never has there been such an engaging public vote system and the public has shown great willingness to participate in the process.

3) We have seen the nominees and we believe that everybody there holds so much talent and skill in their own rights. What were the requirements for artists to be nominated in the different categories?

Like I said, these are not the final nominees, instead, these are pools of artists who are eligible for nomination. What is required of an artist to be placed in these top 20 pools, is visible activity in the hip hop industry between September 2008 and October 2009. Artists who have released albums, created graf pieces, entered dance, DJ and beat boxing competitions, as well as all those who have practiced their art form publicly… those are the artists eligible for nomination.

3) Some of the categories, such as the award for “The Best Producer” and ‘The Best Dance Crew” is not open to public voting. In such cases, how will these winners be judged or determined?

The categories, Best Producer, Best Dance Crew and Best B-Boy/Girl are not up for public vote because of the nature of these disciplines. Lets start with Best Producer. This category is difficult for the public to vote for because of the criteria. The Best Producer is judged according to the overall body of work made public by the producer. Points are awarded for the number of songs released within the eligibility period, carrying the producer’s work. Extra points are given for the success of the music produced by that individual. The producer is then awarded points for mass appeal, and most importantly, for artistic appeal. The public is often unaware of the producers of various songs, and have often not followed a producer’s work to the extent that they are able to make a fair comparison, based on the producers’ full body of work. We have therefore called upon a panel of judges who would give their professional input and make well informed decisions. Similarly, the categories of Best Dance Crew and Best B-Boy/Girl, are judged according to competitions entered, competitions won as well as other significant performances with a heavy emphasis on dance technique and style. These are also adjudicated by a credible panel of judges.

5) Okay let us get onto the main event. When and where will the second annual MTN HYPE Awards take place?

The second annual HYPE Awards are set to take place on the 12th of February at the Lyric Theatre. Please log onto www.hypemagazine.co.za for updates.

6) The tickets to the event… where can we get ourselves tickets and what is the price range?

I’m glad you are already excited about getting to the main event. I would once again ask you to stay logged onto www.hypemagazine.co.za for updates and in future, opportunities to win tickets. But for now… do the right thing. Log onto the site, click on the big HYPE Awards logo and VOTE SMART!

SOME HYPE IN THE HYPE AWARDS

The number one selling South African hip hop magazine, Hype, is ready to host their second annual Hype awards. Hype magazine has put out 20 nominees on about 15 different categories. Just like the SAMA, these awards are sponsored by SA's biggest music lover, MTN. We are trying to get hold of the editor of Hype about these spectacular event, but for now you can head over to http://www.hypemagazine.co.za/ and vote for you favourite dance crew, producer, album and whatever category featured. We will fill you in on the event no later than next week.
Take care!!

IS THIS THE GREATEST SA TAG TEAM??

We all know of some beef that hip hop heads and house music fans have against each others' music tastes. For example, my dear friends, Siz and Scoop are real house music haters... let it be known that these two gentlemen, hate house music with a passion. LMAO!!!! I'm not going to promise anyone that Siz and Scoop will start listening to house music very soon, but somewhere in this world, somehow... things are really starting to change.

First I heard that Amerido track by Dj Cindo ft Chilli M. The lyrics of the song is taken from the new L-tido track. To be real honest with ya'll, it was the first time in my entire music run life, that I heard a house track with the word "SWAGGER" in it. I'm totally loving the single though... and between this track and the L-tido one... uhm, I won't say which one is better cos' I definitely can't pull an AKA type of diss track.

Then I heard a song featuring Slikour by Big Nuz if I ain't mistaken. It's a full house track and slikour has a verse there. I don't know if I should say that he was trying to sing, or rapping... but I'm definitley sure that he contributed to the club-banger. But Slikour ain't the only emcee collaborating with house djs. TearGas also collaborated with a house dj in their new album, Dark Or Blue. That might just be one of the best songs I've from them in a while. Now Imma give them another chance.

After all these events and iesh, I hear something that really got me to write this article. The F.Eu event happened last night in Vacc Matta and I hear it was ROCKASS!!!! The host, Dj Fresh, and partner Franky, surprised the crowd, and played a HIP HOP SET!! Okay, this needs a rewind... HOUSE DJs FRESH AND FRANKY PLAYED A HIP HOP SET!!!! Ya best believe peeps. It is times like this were I wished I was really there. I've heard Lulo Cafe play hip hop music, but I can't recall Fresh playing hip hop. On his radio show yeah... but in a club??

It sure seems like hip hop and house music are really on the verge of signing a treaty.
It might not be now, nor next year, but House Music and Hip Hop are slowly but surely coming together to make wonders to the entertainment industry. This might just be one hell of a tag team... I definitely want it to happen in my lifetime.

YFM AND JAGERMEISTER PARTY -WHAT A BANGER!!!

So what do you get when you cross a YFM party, mixed with some Jagermeister(drinks and girls) at INC the club???

Hmmm...uhm... Call it a night if mayhem, stupidity, insanity, bonkers or whatever you wanna call it... everybody went BUCK WILD last night at one of the most memorable events in the 2009 calender. LIVE VJ and YFM presenter, Bonang Matheba also know as "Your girl B" was the "hostess with the mostess", already this got me all excited.

I usually don't get to a club before 11pm, but something inside kept telling me to get there at 10pm. So I did, and was very fortunate to get a splendid performance from South African rapper PRO, who did justice to that INC stage. He had the crowd jaw dropping, jumping up and down, whirling their hands and singing along to the 2007 single, Uthini Ngo Pro and his latest single, Sekele. Dancer and singer, Tembi Seete, then took over the stage with yet another impressive performance that might guarantee her a nomination for the best South African entertainer. I am grateful that I had a opportunity to witness such top-drawer performances... F--CK'N AWESOME!!

The djs also got me dancing all night long. Djs Dimplez, Mo Flava, Mac G, C-live, Black Coffee and many more are the people responsible for my sore feet. They got me dancing till the early morning and I didn't even want to leave. The best part for me was the kwaito set, which actually took everyone back to the 90's- playing some old school kwaito hits. Need I mention the stupendous set from House music icon Black Coffee?? I bet he plays that good music intentionally, with one hand, then he'll be looking at the crowd smiling. mxm... I won't lie... he burnt the house, it was definitely on F.I.R.E!!

It was also great seeing the likes of Mika Stefano, AKA, L-tido, Dj Sbu, Melanie Ramjee, Jub Jub, JR and many many more.

If you just happened to be there, between me and you, let's be honest- This was one mind-blowing event. I definitely enjoyed myself. And oh... who came up with the idea of serving ice creams and cake in a club... LMAO, i enjoyed it though. These two party animals really know how to put an event together.

Thanks to YFM and Jagermeister for inviting me to such an astounding party. The organisers did a great job and I just can't wait for the next party. YFM, 99.2... GP's Hottest Frequency indeed!!

PS: I know I didn't post pictures of this event up, but I want to pass the ball to the best photographers in town, who were taking pics all night. They'll be posting the pics up later, so go check it on www.mythunda.com

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!!

HHP FT NAS??? WHAT THE F...???

YES ladies and gentleman. You read it right. South African hip hop artist and head of the mostwako movement, Jabulani Tsambo, also know as HHP or Jabba has worked with a couple of talented artists on his latest project, including the American hip hop heavy weight, NAS ESCOBAR!! WOW, I am so excited about this one man.

The album, titled Dumela( meaning hello in English), is set to be released on the 26th of November, along with some other great artists' works. Dumela is a double disk album. If I understood correctly from my boy Cassper Nyovest, one disk has that real hip hop element and the other one is for the kasi pride... it has that pantsula feel to it( Hip Hop Pantsula... get it??). He collaborated with the likes of Jr, Towdi Mac, Cassper, Element, Notshi, Hussein, and oh yeah...NAS!

Just like Jigga's Blueprint 3 was the most anticipated album in the world, lets go show Jabbaman some love, I think this album is what SA has been waiting for since the introduction of hip hop in this land.

I hear that there will also be a listening session for the new album happening on Saturday the 7th of November. Be the first to hear the tracks and comment on the fabulous life of Jabba and have your chance to met the legend himself. Cover Charge... only R100. See ya'' there.
We'll keep ya updated on this story and more!!
